Conservatories

Conservatories and Orangeries

Many of us have bought homes that have space by lack of the ever-popular and sort-after conservatory or orangery. They offer more space, a social environment, warmth and value to your property.

With a distinct difference between the two being the build and more obviously the roof, conservatories are predominantly a glass-based structure, typically with a brick base and pitched roof, that is largely made of glass. Whereas an orangery is a predominantly brick structure with a flat roof that features large windows. However, interestingly the purpose and price of these different structural additions is comparatively similar, the varying factors primarily come from size, shape, and materials. This means the choice you go with, is ultimately down to your personal preference.

What should you consider before buying?

As with anything involving your property, windows, porches and conservatories come in a whole manner of different shapes and sizes, styles and colours, and can range from single pane to triple glazed. However there are several things to consider before you buy, such as:

  • Style – this could be restricted if you live in a listed building or in a conservation area
  • Efficiency and economy – how does your home hold heat? How much sound does it let in
  • Roof materials – when looking at porches and conservatories
